At its core, these trucks are an incredible value proposition, but keen enthusiasts know Toyota gave its domestic Japanese market options and extras we could only dream of. This 2000 VX Limited has all the goodies, and a few choice aftermarket extras to boot.
Exterior Overview
The 100 series Land Cruiser is one of the most prolific SUV’s found putting around our stateside streets. It’s determined and reliable, strong as an ox, and built on a nearly indestructible body on frame chassis. At its core, these trucks are an incredible value proposition, but keen enthusiasts know Toyota gave its domestic Japanese market options and extras we could only dream of. This 2000 VX Limited has all the goodies, and a few choice aftermarket extras to boot. Finished in Natural White (056), this imposing Land Cruiser is set off by aftermarket fender flares, an OEM winch, Terzo crossbars, and a massive Yakima roof basket. An EGR bug deflector and OEM rainguards give this Cruiser some aerodynamic appeal, and this terrific Toyota rolls on JDM Mozzer SFWII wheels and new 35″ rubber. Even more appealing is the rare, functional factory winch, and the 78k verified and documented miles on the odometer, and with seating for eight, this would be a perfect beach-cruising rig that can haul the whole family around. Tough as nails, yet plush and comfortable to drive around on a commute, this is a Japanese Classic for the ages!
Interior Overview
The interior is a swell place to be for all occupants. If you aren’t a family man, the third row seats can be stowed or removed entirely to expand the cargo hold. The driver can settle in behind a tilt adjustable steering column and OEM woodgrain steering wheel, and power lumbar support can be dialed in to maximize comfort on road trips. While previous generations of Land Cruiser were spartan in design, the 100 series prioritized comfort, and this VX Limited has a full slate of amenities. The center stack is accessible, with controls for the dual-zone climate system within arm’s reach. Cold A/C and hot heat can be supplied to both front and rear zones, and even your third row passengers can adjust temperature and fan speed independent of those riding up front. Adjacent to the HVAC, a modern Eclipse touchscreen audio upgrade also features Bluetooth functionality to pump in the tunes. If you want to post up at the beach and enjoy some natural airflow, all four windows power down with haste, and power locks, keyless entry, and electric folding side mirrors assist daily use. The seating is versatile, and the rear bench can flip forward if you need to expand the cargo hold. The third row seating can also niftily stow against the rear trunk panels until it’s needed again. The headliner is clean and features multiple storage compartments, and the carpets beneath have been protected by some plush OEM floormats. To sweeten the deal even more, the original winch controller is stowed safely in the glovebox, and works like a charm, and the factory trash receptacle is on hand to stow away your straw wrappers and receipts!
Mechanical Overview
The body on frame construction of this Cruiser is no joke, and the same applies to the V8 powerplant that’s found under the hood. The 4.7l engine is fresh off a recent service here at the shop, and cranks over with haste, care of a new 12v battery. To keep the 4.7L on the up and up, a new fuel filter was installed. The engine pulls hard to redline and screams through an upgraded Fujitsubo dual-exit exhaust. Power is fed through a stout automatic and sent to all four wheels through a selective transfercase. Low range is available if needed, and a rare rear locker can be engaged when traversing the slipperiest terrain. Lifted slightly, this Cruiser benefits from an upgraded JAOS rear panhard bar and a front differential drop to correct any changes in geometry. The ride quality is fantastic, and the Land Cruiser is truly prolific on pavement, with new front and rear swaybar endlinks making the suspension safety compliant. For off-road excursions, there is phenomenal ground clearance, and the long wheelbase feels comfortable and planted even at higher speeds. We dialed in the power steering by peforming a full rebuild of the steering rack. After replacing the rack and pinion seals, we reassembled the unit with new boots and bushings, and installed new inner and outer tie rods to help dial in a fresh four wheel alignment. After a fresh power steering flush, this big Cruiser is easy to turn and maneuver. The ABS brakes engage quickly and stop on a dime. We wrapped the Mozzer wheels in meaty 35″ Falken all-terrains. The new tires look mean, quell road noise, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
