The Surf was agile and sporty, like a car, but spacious, durable, and capable off road like a proper SUV. The N180 series improved the passenger experience too, by adding a healthy helping of safety items.
Exterior Overview
When it debuted in 1995, Toyota’s third generation Hilux Surf was unlike any other SUV in the segment. It was agile and sporty, like a car, but spacious, durable, and capable off road, like a proper SUV. The N180 series improved the passenger experience too, by adding a healthy helping of safety items. This SSR-X model is powered by a legendary turbodiesel engine and is fresh off a recent service in our shop. Offered with only 119k verified and documented miles on the clock, this 4×4 is ready to hit the road, whether paved or otherwise. Featuring handsome styling, this Plasma Blue (F9T) surf is set off by a stylish rear spoiler, and a factory spare tire swingarm. Riding on 16″ WEDS Keeler alloys shod in fresh Falken rubber, it looks the part too. Apart from some typical dings, scuffs, and minuscule paint defects, the body is in good shape, and the frame is in killer condition, too. Refined enough for daily duty, these year-round SUVs are versatile and efficient enough to shuttle the kids to school, yet determined enough to do some serious duty off the beaten path. Fun to drive, easy to modify, powerful, and inexpensive to operate, this Japanese Classic is a sure bet!
Interior Overview
The cabin is ergonomically designed, with some decent power equipment and safety options. The dashboard is in fine shape and lacks any distortion or cracking. The driver and passenger can both reach and adjust the automatic climate controls and benefit from dual SRS airbags. The pilot can find the optional driving position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column and the driver’s seat has adjustable lumbar support, which can be toggled with a push of a lever. Power windows supply fresh air to the cabin and for those living in more seasonal climates, A/C and heat work like a charm. Power mirrors and power locks make daily use more enjoyable and the OEM audio functions too. The Moon Mist colored cloth is free of any major rips, stains, or tears apart from a prior driver’s bolster repair. The rear bench reclines to improve passenger comfort and it also tumbles forward and folds flat to increase cargo room. The matching door cards are in good shape, as are the carpets, and even the owner’s manual is included with the purchase of this lovely truck. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note that two of the five LED 4×4 dash lights have stopped functioning, and that there is no button for the power rear spoiler, as it is not original to the Surf.
Mechanical Overview
Fresh off a recent service, including a brand new timing belt and water pump, the 1KZ-TE under the bonnet is ready to rumble. This turn-key truck prioritizes fuel economy, and to get you on track for the road ahead we’ve also performed a fresh coolant flush and installed new glow plugs. One of our trained technicians installed a new A/C belt, and a fresh oil and filter service was performed to get you on track for future maintenance schedules. This four-cylinder produces loads of torque and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that is fresh off a fluid exchange. The selectable transfer case allows the pilot to choose between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and an optional center locker and low range can be engaged during your off-road exploits. The Surf feels predictable at highway speeds and feels comfortable thanks to new front shocks we installed. It gets up and moves well from low RPM, and slowing down isn’t an issue with standard ABS. The steering is light and connected for an SUV, and we completely rebuilt the steering rack for the new American owner. New rack and pinion seals, inner and outer tie rods, rack bushings, and a power steering flush finish out the driveline refresh. Lastly, we installed new front swaybar bushings and aligned everything. The WEDS are shod in fresh Falken all-terrain rubber. Not only do the new tires look good, they’ll provide grip on all surfaces and help you take this handsome Hilux wherever you need to go!
