The UZZ40 Soarer debuted as a power hardtop convertible with silky smooth V8 underpinnings. Although it's considered a bit of an underdog we think the design has aged handsomely.
Exterior Overview
When it debuted in Japan, the Z40 Toyota Soarer had some big shoes to fill. The prior generation was fresh off a successful 10 year production run, and instead of ruining a good thing, Toyota sought to reinvent the chassis entirely. The UZZ40 Soarer debuted as a power hardtop convertible with silky smooth V8 underpinnings. It retained its long wheelbase, rear-wheel-drive layout, and luxurious cockpit, and although it’s considered a bit of an underdog we think the design has aged handsomely. Finished in a factory Black (202) this droptop is set off by 19″ Rays Homura 2X7 alloys, an OEM spoiler, factory adjustable Xenon headlamps, and upmarket Lexus badging. The paint is in terrific shape, save for some tiny nicks and stone chips, and with 99k verified miles on the clock, this freshly serviced Soarer is turn-key ready to parade the highways and byways here in the USA. Clean, collectible, and comfortable, Japanese Classics like this just don’t exist in the new car market, and we think this Soarer has a lot to love!
Interior Overview
Upholstered in a durable black leather, this cockpit exemplifies quality. The real-wood accent trim is handsome, and complements the cowhides nicely. The upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears, which is surprising, and the same can be said for the condition of the leather wrapped, power-adjustable steering wheel. The driver can tilt or telescope the column at will, and cruise control is operable too. To get more comfortable behind the wheel, power adjustable seats are heated, too, and power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors make daily use easy. An OEM keyless entry remote is paired, to make entry and exit seamless. The cabin is a safe place for your and your passengers, thanks to the inclusion of dual front and side airbags. The factory radio has been ditched in favor of a more modern Pioneer unit, and Bluetooth functionality is at hand to blast your tunes. Adjacent to the headunit, digital automatic climate control is easy to operate, with cold A/C or hot heat on standby. Of course, you’ll likely prefer going topless, and retracting the hardtop into the trunk is a stress-free affair, as we’ve serviced the mechanism. The trunk opens up to reveal a surprisingly large storage compartment, including a spare tire and a tool kit. The original owner’s manual and maintenance booklet are also on hand. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect, as we did want to note the factory navigation screen is no longer operable after the audio upgrade.
Mechanical Overview
A smooth and luxurious convertible needs an engine to match, and Toyota’s 3UZ-FE certainly fits the bill. This 4.3l V8 is whisper-quiet, fresh off a recent service, and shares the majority of its parts with its USDM equivalent, making this Soarer one of the easiest ownership experiences we have here on the lot. It cranks over with haste, and we took care of a huge list of preventative maintenance to make ownership stress free in the states. Our trained technicians performed a timing belt and water pump service, which should last you the next 10 years or 100,000 kilometers. While we had the front half of the engine torn down, a new thermostat was installed, and we replaced the valve cover gaskets to shore up any unwanted oil leaks. New spark plugs work in tandem with a new engine air filter and fuel filter to smooth out combustion, and with the maintenance performed this silky eight-cylinder mill gets up and goes. A 5 speed automatic gearbox handles shifts, and the long wheelbase helps aid high speed stability. We also replaced the front passenger wheel bearing for some drivetrain rehab. RS*R lowering springs feel comfortable and composed over bumps, and new front tension arms help dial in the handling. A new power steering pump assists maneuverability, and we dialed in a fresh alignment with the help of a new front right tie rod. Two new tires up front assist the factory ABS system with stopping power, and the next owner should be set for tens of thousands of miles to come!
