Daihatsu

Daihatsu Motor Co., established in 1907 and a Toyota subsidiary since 1998, specializes in compact and kei-class vehicles designed for Japan's domestic market. Its JDM export interest centers on the Terios (compact SUV, J100/J102 platform), Hijet (kei truck, S-series), and Mira/Cuore microcar lines. Daihatsu's engines are predominantly sub-700cc units (EF, JB-JL series) meeting kei regulations, though the Terios used the 1.3L HE-EG and K3-VE. Export demand is driven primarily by their sub-$15,000 price point, right-hand drive, and 25-year eligibility window; the Hijet in particular is sought in North America as a farm and utility vehicle once it clears the 25-year rule.
